Create and compare tax scenarios

Tax scenarios let you test changes to tax assumptions without rewriting the client's underlying income records. For an alternative schedule of equity sales or exercises, create a trading plan.

Open the scenario workspace

  1. Open the client's Tax tab.

  2. Choose Scenario Comparison View and the tax year.

  3. Select Add Scenario, or select Load beside an existing scenario in the Tax Scenario Library.

Use a name that describes the assumption, such as “Lower wages in 2027.” The library shows the source and calculation/update information so you can distinguish manual scenarios from plan imports.

Edit an assumption

  1. Select an editable value in the scenario's tax table.

  2. Review the current rows and amounts in the editor.

  3. Change or add the relevant rows.

  4. Select Update draft.

Where an editor offers Pull income from plan, choose the intended plan before pulling its values. Check the resulting rows so income is not included twice. When copying a prior year, review all copied facts for the new year.

Save before leaving

Updating a draft is a separate step from saving the scenario. Use Save for an existing scenario or Save As to keep a separate version. Check that the library shows the saved scenario and no remaining unsaved-change warning.

Duplicate starts from an existing scenario. Rename changes its label. Delete removes that saved scenario; retain any version you still need for a client recommendation.

Compare results

Choose the scenarios in Compare scenarios (up to three). Review income and deductions first, then tax liability, withholding/payments, balance due, AMT, and state details. Resolve warnings before relying on the comparison.

If results look unexpected, verify the year, scenario source, wage rows, filing status, and state. Compare against the Tax tab baseline and tax-input checklist.
