Import and review a federal tax return

Tax Return AI Import extracts information from a federal Form 1040 PDF for review before updating the client's assumptions and prior-year base case.

Choose the client and file

  1. Open the client → Profile → Tax → Prior-Year Base Case → Import 1040, or select Tax Return AI Import from Import.

  2. Confirm the intended client in the current workspace.

  3. Choose one federal Form 1040 PDF, no larger than 15 MB.

  4. Select Extract 1040.

Tax Return AI Import client and PDF selection

Use a readable return for the intended year. Do not upload a different document type simply because it is a PDF.

Review before applying

Check Tax Year and Filing Status first. Then review income, Schedule D amounts, deductions, credits and payments, AMT information, rates, and any equity-compensation signals.

Correct extracted values against the return and its supporting schedules. Not found is not the same as zero. Read every warning; extraction can miss or misinterpret a value.

Update the client

Select Update client assumptions only after the review is complete. The confirmation lists changed fields and records an import-history entry. Open the client's Profile and verify the Prior-Year Base Case, then review the matching year in Tax.

This import updates tax assumptions and the prior-year tax scenario. It does not create or modify equity grants, lots, or actions. Import those records through the equity workflow.

If extraction fails

Check file type, size, readability, and the selected client. Use Add prior-year base case in Profile when manual entry is more appropriate. Contact Chat with us if a supported file repeatedly fails, using an approved channel for sensitive documents.
